Urban Meyer Steps Down, Again

For the second time Urban Meyer steps down from his head coaching position at Florida, only this time I think it’s permanent.  Meyer accomplished everything he has wanted to accomplish as a head coach no matter what team he has been with, he won a BCS bowl at Utah, and won two national titles with Florida.  Being such an ego maniac and a competitor it’s easy to see why Meyer finally stepped down.

The only way Meyer can go is down, and I think he’s realized that.  He doesn’t have a spread option quarterback anymore, and there doesn’t seem to be much promise in his recruiting classes for another Tebow, especially after seeing the three different quarterback system that Florida tried to run this season.

As far as Meyer going to Denver, many sources such as Chris Mortensen via Twitter completely rule that out, and I agree.  Meyer wouldn’t put himself into a position where he can’t win and be successful, and the only offense he knows and is comfortable with is the spread option which wouldn’t work in the NFL.  I believe Meyer will spend some time away from football for two or three years and keep an eye out for a job that interests him.  Where is hard to tell, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was somewhere within the SEC or in a state where he could easily recruit in-state such as Texas or California, and if Lane Kiffin continues to be the awful coach that his record indicates then Urban Meyer at USC could be an interesting landing spot.
